In the formulation of waterborne coatings, industrial paints, metallic effect finishes, and personal care products, anti-settling, anti-sagging, pseudoplastic flow control, and pigment orientation are critical factors defining final product quality
Traditional inorganic silicate clay rheology modifiers form a three-dimensional "house of cards" network structure when hydrated in aqueous phases, imparting exceptional low-shear viscosity (pseudoplasticity and thixotropic behavior)
Ruike Chemical provides a comprehensive series of silicate clay rheology modifiers designed as direct, drop-in replacements for major international brands (such as BYK® and Deuchem®), helping formulators optimize performance while reducing costs
When layered silicate clays (such as lithium magnesium sodium silicates/synthetic bentonites) disperse into water, mechanical shear causes them to delaminate into nanoscale platelets:
[Polar Media Hydration] ──► Platelet delamination & swelling, exposing positive edge charges and negative face charges │▼[Electrostatic Attraction] ──► Formation of a 3D "house of cards" gel network at rest (High low-shear viscosity / Anti-settling) │▼[Shear-Thinning & Recovery] ──► Network breakdown under application shear (Low viscosity for easy brushing/spraying); rapid recovery post-shear (Anti-sagging / Pigment orientation)
Pseudoplasticity & Thixotropy: Delivers high viscosity under static or low-shear conditions to guarantee long-term storage stability, while rapidly thinning under high-shear application (such as spraying or rolling) for smooth leveling
Metallic Pigment Orientation: In systems containing aluminum flakes or pearlescent pigments, the layered silicate restricts random rotation and settling through spatial network constraints, aligning them parallel to the substrate to maximize the metallic "flop" effect
We offer a full range of high-performance silicate rheological additives that enable direct drop-in replacement for international counterparts, streamlining laboratory testing and plant substitution

The key to successfully using silicate clay additives lies in complete hydration and delamination:
Pre-Gel Preparation:It is recommended to prepare a 3% - 5% aqueous pre-gel before use. Disperse the powder in deionized water under high-speed stirring (tip speed <10 m/s) for 15–20 minutes until a crystal-clear or translucent homogeneous gel forms
Order of Addition:
During formulation design, the pre-gel should be added into the water phase before resin emulsions or pigments are introduced to ensure the 3D network structure builds completely.
Synergy with Associative Thickeners (HEUR/HASE):Inorganic silicate additives provide robust low-shear viscosity and anti-settling control. Combining them with associative thickeners (which control mid-to-high shear leveling viscosity) creates premium coating films with outstanding anti-sagging and flawless leveling
Selecting the right silicate rheological additive is an economical and effective way to solve anti-settling, sagging, and metal flake orientation challenges in waterborne systems
