In the Lost Foam Casting (LFC) process, the quality of the water-based coating directly determines the surface finish and dimensional accuracy of the final casting. However, formulators often face a "triangular challenge": achieving excellent leveling to cover complex molds, maintaining superior wetting on hydrophobic foam (EPS/STMMA) surfaces, and completely eliminating air bubbles to prevent gas porosity defects.
To address these core pain points, RK-Chem provides a field-proven additive combination.
1. Mastering Leveling and Surface Uniformity: RF-7495
Lost foam coatings must form a uniform and smooth protective layer. RF-7495, a high-performance organosiloxane copolymer, is the key to solving leveling issues:
Enhanced Smoothness: It significantly improves the fluidity and smoothness of the coating, ensuring a level surface after drying.
Anti-Shrinkage amp; Anti-Cratering: It provides strong anti-shrinkage properties in water-based systems, preventing defects like orange peel or pinholes.
High Temperature Resistance: It maintains film integrity during the high-heat casting process and supports excellent recoatability.
2. Overcoming Hydrophobic Substrate Wetting: RK-8303
Because foam plastic patterns have extremely low surface energy, standard water-based coatings struggle to spread. RK-8303, an alkynediol epoxy ethane adduct, transforms this interaction:
Rapid Wetting: It quickly reduces surface tension, allowing the coating to easily wrap around complex mold edges and ensuring consistent coating weight.
Synergistic Foam Control: Unlike traditional wetting agents, RK-8303 improves wetting performance while simultaneously providing defoaming characteristics.
Thermal Stability: With a high cloud point (gt;51°C), it remains efficient and transparent even as system temperatures fluctuate.
3. Eliminating Micro-bubbles and Porosity: RP-6210
Lost foam coatings easily entrain air during mixing or application (such as dipping or flow coating). If not discharged, this leads to surface pits or internal gas holes. RP-6210 is specifically designed for high-viscosity water-based systems:
Rapid amp; Long-term Defoaming: It quickly eliminates large process foam and provides long-lasting suppression of micro-bubbles during application.
Prevention of Pinholes: It effectively prevents pinholes caused by air retention, significantly increasing the yield of high-quality castings.
System Compatibility: It maintains stability without separation or affecting inter-layer adhesion, even in high-solid content foundry systems.
Technical Recommendations and Dosage
To achieve the optimal balance, we recommend the following dosage levels in your formulation:
Leveling Agent RF-7495: 0.1% - 0.5% (Pre-dilution is recommended to optimize dispersion).
Wetting Agent RK-8303: 0.1% - 1.0% (Mix thoroughly before use to ensure solubility).
Defoamer RP-6210: Dosage should be determined by testing; addition during the grinding stage is recommended for best results.
