In the waterborne coatings and colorant manufacturing industries, Iron Oxide Yellow (Pigment Yellow 42) is widely utilized for its exceptional weather resistance and cost-effectiveness. However, due to its high oil absorption and large specific surface area, formulating high-concentration Iron Oxide Yellow pigment pastes often presents technical challenges, including elevated viscosity, poor fluidity, and storage thickening.
Selecting the right water-based dispersant is critical to lowering paste viscosity, enhancing dispersion efficiency, and ensuring long-term storage stability. This article provides a comprehensive evaluation of four dispersants—Coadis 615, PL-22, PL-26, and RD-9605—based on empirical test data in high-load Iron Oxide Yellow aqueous pastes.
All four dispersants evaluated in this comparative study feature a active solid content of 40%:
Dispersant Name | Solid Content (%) | Supplier / Description |
Coadis 615 | 40% | Arkema |
PL-22 | 40% | Clariant |
PL-26 | 40% | Clariant |
RD-9605 | 40% | High-Performance Wetting & Dispersing Agent |
Technical Note: Specializing in advanced chemical additives, rk-chem.com manufactures high-efficiency wetting agents, dispersants, and anti-settling additives, including specialized solutions such as RD-9605 and RD-9617.
Using a standardized benchmark slurry system (comprising water, R-996 Titanium Dioxide, CC-700 Calcium Carbonate, etc.), Brookfield viscosity (20 rpm/cps) was measured across increasing dispersant dosages (dispersant solid content relative to total pigment/filler weight):
Dispersion Efficiency Ranking: PL-22 > PL-26 > RD-9605 > Coadis 615.
Low-Dosage Performance: At a low dosage range of 0.15% to 0.20%, PL-22 displayed superior viscosity reduction, rapidly lowering system viscosity. Coadis 615 exhibited the highest initial viscosity (>45,000 cps) at low loading, requiring higher concentrations (>0.30%) to reach a stable viscosity plateau. RD-9605 demonstrated a balanced, consistent viscosity reduction curve suitable for versatile processing.
To evaluate performance under actual high-load conditions, an in-house color paste containing 66% Iron Oxide Yellow 311 was prepared (shaker dispersion for 2 hours):
Water: 183g
Thickeners & pH Modifiers (LT 2% GEL / DMEA / PEG-400 / LCN-407): 103g
Defoamers (TEGO-902W / RSC): 4g
Dispersant (Coadis 615 / PL-22 / PL-26 / RD-9605): 50g
Iron Oxide Yellow 311 Pigment: 660g
Initial testing confirmed that all paste formulations achieved a fineness of <10 μm with pH values maintained within the 8.6–8.9 range.
Room Temperature Storage (1 Month): All 4 paste samples maintained excellent compatibility prior to stirring and displayed smooth, pouring fluidity after mild agitation.
50°C Heat Storage (1 Month): Following accelerated thermal aging, all formulations retained workable pourability without severe caking or irreversible thixotropic gelation.
Brookfield viscosity (6 rpm and 60 rpm) was tracked at room temperature (RT) and under 50°C heat storage at intervals of 24 hours, 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, and 4 weeks:
Viscosity Growth Rate: PL-22 and RD-9605 demonstrated the highest storage stability over 4 weeks of thermal testing, maintaining minimal viscosity drift.
Coadis 615: Exhibited higher initial and post-storage viscosity levels compared to the other three candidates, indicating weaker viscosity dampening in high-pigment-load Iron Oxide Yellow systems.
The prepared color pastes were let down into clear coat, waterborne industrial white paint, and latex paint systems to evaluate 60° gloss and
20% Color Paste + 80% Clear Coat System:
Coadis 615 yielded the highest gloss reading (94.9 at 60°).
PL-22, PL-26, and RD-9605 maintained 60° gloss values between 91.4 and 92.2.
After 1 month of 50°C heat storage, all samples showed a slight increase in gloss due to the release of entrapped micro-bubbles over time.
Industrial & Latex Tinted Systems (8% Color Paste Addition):
Rub-out tests revealed negligible color difference across all samples upon visual inspection.
