In the formulation of water-based coatings, adhesives, and textile inks, rheology control is much more than just reaching a target viscosity. It is about balancing storage stability, application feel, and final film appearance. Hydrophobically Modified Alkali-Swellable Emulsions (HASE) provide a "dual-thickening" mechanism—combining aqueous phase thickening with associative thickening of emulsion particles—offering a more robust solution than traditional cellulose (HEC).

The Science: RT-3633 provides extreme efficiency in the low-shear range, mimicking the behavior of high-molecular-weight cellulose. It builds a high yield value and a strong gel structure.
Best For: Formulas requiring maximum sag resistance and anti-settling properties. It is ideal for textured coatings, high-build paints, and low-gloss interior wall coatings. Even when diluted, it maintains excellent viscosity retention.
The Science: RT-3636 organically combines water-phase and associative thickening to deliver high KU (Krebs Unit) efficiency while maintaining flow.
Best For: Improving brushability and leveling in low-emulsion volume paints. It offers a creamy, stable "in-can" appearance and significantly reduces splattering during roller application, making it a cost-effective alternative to mid-range HEC.
The Science: Unlike typical HASE thickeners, RT-3637 is uniquely designed to boost ICI (high-shear) viscosity. It focuses on the rheology during the actual moment of application.
Best For: Enhancing hiding power and film fullness. It ensures a uniform film thickness and outstanding flow. In high-emulsion or small-particle-size latex formulas, RT-3637 can even be used as a standalone fluidic thickener to achieve a professional, uniform finish.
A professional formulation rarely relies on a single thickener. For a premium water-based paint, we recommend a synergy approach:
For Anti-Sag + Leveling: Combine RT-3633 (for structure) with RT-3637 (for flow).
For Cost-Optimization: Use RT-3636 as the primary thickener to replace cellulose, improving biological stability and enzymatic resistance.
Application Note: All HASE thickeners require a pH environment of 8.0–9.0 to activate. We recommend diluting the product 1:1 or 1:3 with water before slowly adding it to the neutralized system under low-speed agitation.
