Technical Guide: Selection and Application of WBA vs. NXZ Mineral Oil Defoamers

May 21,2026

1. Product Positioning and Ruike Chemical Benchmarking Matrix

To ensure seamless integration and effortless formulation optimization for global clients, Ruike Chemical provides precise alternatives to the industry’s two leading mineral oil defoamer standards:

Core Technical Edge

RP-6218

WBA

Molecular-grade / Modified Mineral Oil (Yellow turbid liquid)

Exceptional compatibility; specializes in the let-down stage and microbubble elimination.

NXZ (1)

NXZ

Classic Mineral Oil (Amber cloudy liquid)

100% active, heavy-duty formulation; broad-spectrum emulsion compatibility and high shear stability.

2. Core Application Differences: WBA (RP-6218) vs. NXZ (NXZ-1)

Although both products are derived from mineral oil chemistries and feature 100% active compositions free of water, their distinct molecular modifications and bubble-breaking mechanisms dictate different roles within the production process:

A. The WBA Pathway (Ruike RP-6218): The Molecular-Grade Microbubble Specialist

  • Technical Characteristics: RP-6218 utilizes molecular-level technology to overcome the traditional tradeoff between compatibility and defoaming performance. It has a density of approximately $0.87\text{g/ml}$ ($25^{\circ}\text{C}$) and disperses easily in water.

  • Core Advantage – Microbubble Elimination: Standard mineral oil defoamers struggle against tiny microbubbles or "blind foam" generated during high-speed processing or spraying. RP-6218 exhibits a far superior ability to break these microscopic bubbles compared to conventional mineral oil alternatives.

  • Optimal Addition Stage: Highly recommended for the paint adjustment / let-down stage. Thanks to its excellent compatibility, it can be added late in the process—even after viscosity has been established—without inducing surface defects like cratering, fisheyes, or loss of gloss.

B. The NXZ Pathway (Ruike NXZ-1): The Heavy-Duty Broad-Spectrum Suppressor

  • Technical Characteristics: NXZ (1) is a classic liquid defoamer with 100% active ingredients and a viscosity range of $50\text{--}1000\text{mPa}\cdot\text{s}$.

  • Core Advantage – Shear Stability & Durability: It is formulated for a wide spectrum of emulsion systems (including styrene-butadiene, acrylic, PVC, and VAE copolymers). It delivers excellent shear stability and long-term storage durability, ensuring the coating retains its defoaming capability even after extended shelf life.

  • Optimal Addition Stage: Best added directly during the grinding/milling stage or at the beginning of mass production. It withstands the violent shear of high-speed dispersion, consistently suppressing large macro-bubbles while maintaining high safety for film gloss.

3. Global Market Competitors and Selection Strategy

When developing formulations for architectural coatings, industrial latex paints, or water-based adhesives, formulators frequently choose between the WBA and NXZ pathways. Use the following guide for horizontal comparison:

Selection Criteria

WBA Route (Ruike RP-6218)

NXZ Route (Ruike NXZ-1)

Industry Benchmarks

Imported WBA grades, Cognis/BASF molecular series

Nopco NXZ, San Nopco classic series

Emulsion Compatibility

High-compatibility water-based adhesives & coatings

Broad-spectrum latexes, styrene, acrylic, VAE, PVA

Recommended Dosage

0.1% - 0.5% of paint volume

0.2% - 0.3% of total formula ($1\text{--}2\%$ for adhesive solids )

Primary Pain Points Solved

Microbubbles from roller/spray application, cratering

High-speed macro-foaming, defoaming decay over time

Selection Rule of Thumb:

  1. Choose WBA (RP-6218) when microbubbles cause pinholes in the cured film. Standard mineral oils cannot easily penetrate the highly elastic walls of microbubbles. A molecular-grade defoamer is required to rapidly spread across the micro-film interface to collapse them.

  2. Choose NXZ (1) for high-PVC, cost-sensitive architectural paints. For standard interior flat paints or exterior engineering coatings, NXZ’s heavy-duty macro-bubble suppressionand long-term shelf-life durabilitydeliver the highest cost-performance efficiency.

4. Processing and Manufacturing Recommendations

To maximize the performance of RP-6218 and NXZ (1) alongside your rheology package, please observe the following production guidelines:

  • Stir Thoroughly Before Use: Because both defoamers have extremely high active content and low water content, layering or separation may naturally occur over time. They must be thoroughly agitated before application to ensure uniform distribution of the active ingredients.

  • Low-Temperature Handling: For RP-6218, if freezing occurs during winter storage or low-temperature transit, do not apply direct heat. Allow the product to melt slowly at room temperature and stir thoroughly before introducing it into production. Its defoaming efficiency will remain completely uncompromised.

  • The Dual-Defoamer Synergy: In high-end water-borne coatings, the most robust strategy often involves a "combination punch." Add 0.15% NXZ (1) during the grinding stage to suppress mechanical air entrapment. Later, complement it by adding 0.2% RP-6218 during the let-down stage to wipe out residual microbubbles and prevent application defects. This dual approach pairs perfectly with associative thickeners (such as RT-3625).
